Home Office Key Elements To Consider

If you are considering building a home office or designating a room in your home to work from, you should be mindful of a few things that will make the space a more productive environment.  Wether you spend a few hours of a full work week in the home office, you’ll want it to feel inviting, organized and comfortable.

As you could probably guess, location is key!  The ideal room for a productive work environment will be located furthest from where the most action is:  your kitchen, family room and kids’ rooms.   The idea is to disconnect from noise and distractions.

If you are in the designing stages of your new built, choose a location with plenty of natural light and views to rest your eyes from the screen.  Select translucent window coverings that will reduce glare and dim the room if the afternoon sun hits your windows.   We recommend to select light and neutral wall colors, especially if you plan on furnishing some part of the room with open book shelves or built in shelving.

Create a floor plan before buying office furniture. Decide what your style is and how it incorporates with the rest of the home.  Room designing apps are very helpful and allow you to pre-view your design and decor in 3D.  Key pieces in a home office is a functional desk, a credenza, filing cabinet or bookcase with doors for storage, a comfortable desk chair as well as one or two “visitor chairs” that either pull up to your desk or are located where you are comfortably able to have a conversation from where you are sitting.

Nothing can make a room feel more cluttered than visible electric cords from computers, lamps, printers, TVs and whatever technology you have connected in the room.  Plan where the equipment will be located and how to discreetly connect and hide it.  Go wireless whenever possible and use cord tamers, zip ties and hooks to hide unsightly cabling.

We have designed and built many types of home offices including working nooks and annex locations with one goal in mind:  to create a space where home owners feel motivated and enjoy spending time in.   We love incorporating different styles and design ideas, let’s discuss your dream office.
